How Do I Choose the Right Size Rug for My Room?

Choosing the right rug can completely transform a space. It can make a room feel elevated, cohesive, and inviting. But if there’s one mistake I see over and over again in my shop, it’s this:

People almost always choose rugs that are too small.

After years of helping customers choose rugs for their homes— especially one-of-a-kind vintage Moroccan rugs — I’ve learned that rug size is often the difference between a room that feels finished and one that feels slightly “off.”

Here’s how to choose the right rug size for your space.

The Most Common Rug Mistake: Going Too Small

When customers walk into the shop looking for a rug, they often gravitate toward smaller sizes like 5x7 or 6x9. It feels like a safe option.

But in most living spaces, those sizes are actually too small.

A rug should anchor the furniture in the room. When the rug is too small, the furniture floats around it instead of feeling connected.

A good rule of thumb:

At minimum, the front legs of all upholstered furniture should sit on the rug.

This instantly makes the space feel larger, more intentional, and more elevated.

My Rule of Thumb for Rug Sizes by Room

These are the guidelines I share with customers in the shop when they’re choosing a rug.

Living Room Rug Size

Your rug should be large enough that the front legs of all upholstered furniture sit on the rug.

This includes:

  • Sofas

  • Accent chairs

  • Sectionals

This helps anchor the furniture and visually connect the seating area.

Typical sizes that work well:

  • 8x10

  • 9x12

  • 10x14 (for larger living rooms)

Smaller rugs tend to make the room feel disconnected and unfinished. I know it's hard to find vintage Moroccan rugs that are this size but we do have a few close to 7x10 in our inventory!

Bedroom Rug Size

Bedrooms should feel cozy and soft underfoot when you get out of bed.

The rug should extend at least 2 feet from all sides of the bed.

This means when you step out of bed in the morning, your feet land on the rug instead of a cold floor.

Common options:

  • 8x10 under a queen bed

  • 9x12 under a king bed

If the room layout doesn’t allow for a large rug, runners on each side of the bed can also work beautifully.

Dining Room Rug Size

This may be a surprising coming from an Interior Designer, but I actually do not recommend rugs in Dining rooms! Rugs in Dining Rooms tend to be hard to clean and function well in those spaces. If you absolutely must, your rug should be large enough that chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.

If chairs slide off the rug when someone sits down, the rug is too small.

Ideally the rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the dining table on all sides.

This keeps the room feeling balanced and functional.

Entryways and Hallways

Hallway runners should run at least ¾ the length of the hallway.

Too-short runners can make the hallway feel choppy instead of visually elongating the space.

A properly sized runner draws the eye down the hallway and makes the space feel longer and more intentional.

What If the Perfect Rug Isn’t the Perfect Size?

Because we specialize in vintage Moroccan rugs, many of the rugs I carry are one-of-a-kind. That means we don’t always have every size available.

When a rug is slightly smaller than ideal, one of my favorite solutions is layering rugs.

We’ll place one of these underneath the Moroccan rug:

  • A neutral rug

  • A natural fiber rug (like jute or sisal)

  • Or a simple solid rug

This allows the vintage rug to stay the focal point of the room while giving it the width and scale the space needs.

Layering is also a beautiful way to add texture and depth to a room.

A Design Secret: Bigger Rugs Always Look Better

Here’s the advice I give customers all the time:

If you’re deciding between two rug sizes, choose the bigger one.

Larger rugs:

  • Make rooms feel more luxurious

  • Create better furniture layouts

  • Visually expand the space

  • Make everything feel more cohesive

Going too small is one of the easiest ways for a room to feel unfinished.

So when in doubt?

Going bigger for rugs is always better. Don’t skimp on the size! A properly sized rug will make your space feel more cohesive, grounded, and intentional—once you have your dimensions right, you can shop our available rugs to find the perfect piece for your space.

Final Thoughts

The right rug size does more than cover the floor.

It anchors your furniture, defines the room, and brings warmth and texture into your home.

And if you ever fall in love with a one-of-a-kind rug that isn’t quite the perfect size, there are always creative ways—like layering—to make it work beautifully in your space.
